Lost Dutchman is one of my favorite places to capture special moments in Arizona. There’s just something about the Superstition Mountains, the desert landscape and that gorgeous Arizona light that makes every session feel a little different. Whether I'm doing a couples, engagement, maternity or family session, the areas gives me so much to work with.

Located near Apache Junction at the base of the Superstition Mountains, Lost Dutchman State Park has some of the most beautiful desert scenery in Arizona. The red rock formations, over 100 desert trails, saguaros, and golden hour light create an incredible backdrop for engagement photos, couples sessions, maternity photos and family photography.

As an Arizona couples photographer, I love locations that allow my clients to relax, explore and actually enjoy their session instead of feeling like they’re standing in front of a backdrop. Lost Dutchman gives us plenty of room to do exactly that.

Why Lost Dutchman Is One of My Favorite Photo Locations

There is something about the Superstition Mountains that makes photographs here feel different.

Every time I photograph at Lost Dutchman, I’m reminded of why I love Arizona so much. The landscape is serene, beautiful and completely unique to this part of the state. The mountains seem to change with the light, and sunset can turn an already incredible location into something magical.

For me, the best part is that we don’t have to force the photos.

We can walk, talk, laugh, explore and let the landscape do some of the work.

That’s exactly how I want my sessions to feel; relaxed, natural and fun.

Whether you’re planning Lost Dutchman engagement photos, maternity photos or a family session, there’s plenty of variety without having to spend the entire session driving from one location to another.

And yes… there’s a little bit of spooky history thrown in for good measure. 😂

Where is Lost Dutchman State Park?

The park is located at the base of the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour east of Phoenix.

Are there any Fees to Use Lost Dutchman State Park?

Day use fees are required; the current fee is $10 per car. Always check the Arizona State Parks website before planning your trip as these fees are subject to change.

What is the Best Trail to Use for a Session?

I personally use the Treasure Loop Trail which is where you will find a wooden fence line, I also like to use it in some of my photos. I just walk through the gate and find a good spot with a backdrop of the mountain and lots of Saguaro Cacti. There is also a bathroom at this trailhead if you would to change during a session.

What Time of Day is Best for Photos at Lost Dutchman?

Golden hour is one of my favorite times to shoot here, early mornings are also amazing.

Do You Travel to Lost Dutchman from Buckeye?

Yes! I am based in Buckeye, and I am more than happy to travel anywhere in the state to capture your beautiful moments!

Do You Need a Photography Permit at Lost Dutchman?

This is extremely important to verify before your session because of park rules and commercial photography requirements can change. I would recommend checking the Arizona State Park website.
